About the artist and the paintings

About the artist

Born in Sheffield before moving to London to study. Exhibited in a number of galleries in London and the South East including the Indian High Commission Cultural centre; the Nehru centre.

My work does not try to capture the chaotic bustle of the Indian cities which many people associate with India. I am more interested in the slower paced passage of time found in less visited parts of the country and the traditional lives and issues faced by rural Indian women.

  About the paintings

I seek to represent beauty and tensions by a series of juxtapositions:

  • poise and feminine beauty against injustice and drudgery,
  • fleeting passing life against cultural longevity
  • the amazing colour ,pattern and textures against harsh weathered landscapes both urban and desert.

My challenge has been to distill all these to create the essence of rural India.

I have created complex layered colour fields by using a range of media including authentic materials from India.  My backgrounds are either totally  abstract or include references to Indian architecture or desert landscapes. Age is depicted by the multi layers and the passage of people by scratches, polishing, layers of bill posters, painted political slogans and occasionally graffiti. This working of the media creates pieces that are contemplative, meditative and have historical life.

Nostalgic is a word that has been used to describe my work suggesting it lacks contemporary relevance. In the cities of modern India this may be true but in rural India the issues highlighted in my paintings are still as relevant as ever.
